"Investigate the Investigators!"

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Commissioner Bud Selig, Ex-Senator George J. Mitchell (D-ME), Senator Arlen Spectre (R-PA), misspelling intentional - and any other politician who has in the past (Dowd) is currently, or plans to get involved in some kind of governmental investigation regarding the inner dealings of any sports league, team, or event: this one’s for you.

Dear Commissioner, and/or Offensive Swine Elected Official,

It is our worthy opinion as sports fans AND as United States citizens that commissioning a political figure for the purpose of investigating any GAME is a poor use of our national resources. Any politician or ex-politician or politico accepting such a commission should retire from public life permanently. How can you take yourself seriously when conducting an investigation into… a game?

When we vote for our politicians, we expect you to serve the public. What you have done by getting involved in the matters of a private sports league, especially regarding the Mitchell Report, is inexcusable and reprehensible. It calls into question your personal judgment, and any credentials you may have had as a politician.

When I last checked, we had detectives and law enforcement officials who are charged with the responsibility of overseeing any systematic illegal activity up to and including that done by sports figures within a privately owned team or league. The problem with steroids is a law enforcement problem or a team management problem, not a government problem. Congress actually convened and interviewed baseball players this winter, while we have young men dying on the battlefield. How out of whack could the priorities of Congress possibly be?

Agencies like the DEA, ATF, etc. have the ability and muscle to penetrate MLB, the NFL, or any other sports organization if there is systematic illegal activity going on. Additionally, if there were any “cheating” activities going on, it would be the responsibility of the league to govern its players, teams, and officials – there is no requirement by law that there must be a public investigation into the NFL on the grounds of “moral turpitude” or “the integrity of the game”.

We understand the decision to call in some outside source to probe the dealings of powerful teams, leagues and players. We do not understand the desire of current or former political figures to get involved in this kind of activity.

All that said it is negligible how serious MLB is about actually fixing the problem when there are no clear or stated consequences for those found to be on the wrong side of the rules, not to mention that these teams know who is cheating and who isn’t, and if they don’t, they should. Most look the other way.

Ultimately, all the Mitchell Report served to do was destroy the reputation of a large number of well-respected and beloved athletes. No one has paid any price as a result of the Mitchell Report except on a personal level. Nothing has been solved, there is no change in policy and there is no change in the depth of the abuse “problem” in baseball.

Even when a league chooses to do the right thing and keep the problem in the family, some grandstanding fossil has to come out of the catacombs to publicly question the veracity of the league’s statements and actions, in the case of Spectre and the NFL. Furthermore, if the empty, mindless, Spectre were to get his way, nothing would change in the NFL either.

One last thought, this one directed directly to Mr. Spectre: maybe you should spend a little less time worrying about the NFL and the New England Patriots, and devote more time to your constituents. I spent a little time in your state these last 6 months, and for you to be paying attention to anything on the planet – other than the fact that many people who voted for you live like they would in a third-world country – is a crime of the worst kind.

Let the leagues, teams, and athletes govern themselves. It’s a game – treat it as such – games are not that important when we have soldiers dying so that the games can continue.

Great stuff, Dan! Love it…I’m a hater of anyone involved in tarnishing Roger Clemens’ name!

Love this Dan. This kind of behavior from our elected officials needs to be exposed. Their constituents should understand how they waste our money investigating things that have no bearing on the realities of our lives. Americans are dying every day in a meaningless war. I think THAT deserves far more attention than some unsubstantiated rumors about sports figures. Thanks for articulating it so well!

Much needed sentiment on the recent “political” theater in an event that shouldn’t be, well, “political”. Ultimely, these politicians are concerning themselves in an area that shouldn’t even be in the very realm of their own consideration. When I vote for a senator or congressman, I expect them to do their duty, not go off wasting time in a unrelated area..much less..actually use those governmental facilities to further investigate this unrelated matter.

One questions their incentive. Why did the american public have its eye turned away from the war in Iraq during this time (and the climbing gas prices)? Are we really that concerned whether or not Roger Clemens used steroids, to the point that this news outweighed the importance of american soldiers losing their life? If so where are our priorities? Granted Clemens was an outstanding pitcher, in fact a easy 1st ballot hall of famer..if he’s proven not to have taken steroids, but even so, is he really that important?

I smell something fishy here. By the way, why don’t we hear more about american deaths in Iraq in the first place?
